A high school reunion, skipping rocks, and treating a session like date night.

Micaela and I actually went to high school together and spent years singing in choir side-by-side. I hadn’t seen her in over ten years, so when she and her husband Kyle reached out for a session, I was incredibly excited. She was just as sweet as I remembered, and getting to catch up a decade later was such a gift.

They were celebrating their anniversary, so I told them to treat our time together like a literal date night. They were even heading out to a romantic dinner right after we finished. Because of that, the pressure was completely off. No stiff modeling, no forced poses—just an evening out together by the ocean.

We started our date night watching the waves from the cliffs overlooking Terramar Beach in Carlsbad before making our way down to the sand.

I loved just stepping back and documenting their incredibly sweet, playful energy. You can tell instantly that these two are deeply in love, but more than that, they are true best friends. They spent the entire evening making each other laugh.

One of my absolute favorite unscripted moments was when Kyle started skipping rocks across the water. Micaela tried her hand at it, and Kyle just gently roasted her technique in typical, loving husband fashion. It was so organic, so cute, and completely them!

That is the exact magic of a documentary couples session. It’s not about looking perfectly polished for the camera; it’s about capturing the real, unprompted history of how you two actually interact, laugh, and exist together in this season of your lives.

Kyle and Micaela — thank you for letting me tag along on your anniversary date night and for the sweetest high school reunion. I hope these images always remind you of the fun you share every single day! 🤍
